VISION54 e-News Bring Possibility to Life

The point of practice is to play better, not to hit the most balls.

Let’s Practice!

This time of year, many of you are making plans for your golf game. It’s time to refresh what you choose to focus on. In our first book, Every Shot Must Have A Purpose, we highlighted three types of practice:

Maintenance – tendencies that need regular checkup, for example: aim, alignment, posture, balance, commitment to finish, etc…

Performance – you simulate real playing conditions and perceived pressure.

Future – a new skill or a new shot you want to add to your abilities.

Maintenance Practice

Maintenance Practice

Maintenance for you as a human is obvious. You need to eat, hydrate, sleep, and move your body. You are not learning anything new, or taking your skills to a higher level – you are maintaining your skills. For some it might be checking aim & alignment weekly, posture, ball position, Play Box focus, or making sure the routine in the Think Box doesn’t get too long. What are a handful of technical skills and human skills that you need maintenance on? If you don’t maintain these few things, you can easily get into a slump.

Performance Practice

Performance Practice

Performance practice is the full-on simulation with only one try. You do your full routine – Think Box / Play Box / Memory Box – only hitting the shot once. You can create perceived pressure by hitting nine shots into the greens on the front side of a course you know. You can participate in any game or competitive events, or “bring it on” practice where you bring on something that disturbs you like slow play or putting seeing your shadow. Explore what Play Box works best in these circumstances. Before any big event coming up, you’ll want to increase the amount of performance practice you do.

Future Practice

Future Practice

Future practice involves things you practice that won’t give you a return on your investment of time and energy right away, but you need to do for some time before you see results. Maybe your distance wedges aren’t as good as you want them to be. You need to have good practice sessions for a few weeks, before you actually get better at it. Most technical developments fall under this category. Memory Box is another example of needing to do it for some time, before you notice that you have more confidence stepping into shots. *Note: For those that are in the middle of tournament season, you don’t want to have many ‘future’ projects going on.

For the first time ever, I feel like I have learned skills to PLAY the game, and not only how to swing.
